Break-even ROAS: the minimum your ads must return.
Before judging any campaign, know the line it has to clear. Enter your gross margin to see your break-even ROAS, then add a profit target to set the ROAS goal for Google Ads, Meta or any other channel.

How do you calculate break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your gross margin. At a 50% margin, break-even ROAS is 2x: every $1 of ad spend must produce $2 of revenue just to cover the ad cost. To include a profit target, use 1 divided by (gross margin minus target profit margin).
For example, with a 50% margin and a 15% profit target, the target ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.35, or about 2.86x.
Break-even ROAS is the number that turns a ROAS figure into a decision. A 3x ROAS is excellent for a high-margin service and a loss for a low-margin product.
The break-even formulas.
Your margin sets the floor. Your profit goal sets the target.
Break-even ROAS, answered plainly.
What is break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS is the return on ad spend at which the gross profit from ad-driven sales exactly equals the ad spend. Below it, advertising loses money. Above it, advertising adds profit.
How do I calculate break-even ROAS?
Divide 1 by your gross margin as a decimal. A 40% margin gives 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5x break-even ROAS.
What should my target ROAS be in Google Ads?
Set it above your break-even ROAS by enough to cover your profit goal and any fixed costs such as agency fees. The calculator above gives a target ROAS for any profit percentage.
Does break-even ROAS include repeat purchases?
Not by default. If customers buy again, you can use customer lifetime value instead of first order value, which lowers the ROAS you need on the first sale.
Why does my break-even ROAS seem so high?
Low gross margins require high returns. If your margin is 20%, you need 5x ROAS to break even. Raising prices, increasing order value or improving repeat purchase rates lowers that bar.
