Cost per lead calculator: what can you afford to pay?
Your cost per lead only matters next to what a lead is worth. Enter your spend and lead count to get your CPL and customer acquisition cost, then add close rate and customer value to find the maximum CPL that still makes money.
Cost per lead & CAC
Estimates only. Results depend on your market, offer and tracking.
How do you calculate cost per lead?
Cost per lead (CPL) is total advertising spend divided by the number of leads it generated. Customer acquisition cost (CAC) is spend divided by the number of new customers. The maximum affordable CPL is average customer value multiplied by gross margin and close rate.
For example, $3,000 that produces 60 leads is a $50 CPL. If 25% of leads become customers worth $1,200 at a 50% margin, each lead is worth $150 in gross profit, so you could pay up to $150 per lead and still break even.
That is why a cheap lead is not always a good lead. A higher CPL from a channel that closes at a better rate can be more profitable.
The cost per lead formulas.
Compare what a lead costs with what it is worth. The gap is your margin for growth.
Cost per lead, answered plainly.
What is a good cost per lead?
A good cost per lead is one below the value of a lead, which is average customer value multiplied by gross margin and close rate. Industry averages are less useful than your own numbers, because close rates and customer values vary so much.
What is the difference between CPL and CAC?
Cost per lead counts every inquiry. Customer acquisition cost counts only the leads that became paying customers. CAC is always higher than CPL unless every lead closes.
How can I lower my cost per lead?
The fastest levers are usually cutting wasted spend on irrelevant searches or audiences, improving the landing page conversion rate, and focusing budget on the campaigns with the lowest CPL. A free Google Ads audit can show where to start.
Should I include agency fees in cost per lead?
For profitability decisions, yes. Many businesses track media CPL and fully loaded CPL, which adds management fees and tools.
Why do some channels have higher CPL?
Channels differ in intent and targeting. LinkedIn and high-intent search often cost more per lead but can close at higher rates and larger deal sizes.
