The short answer

How do you calculate car wash membership lifetime value?

Membership lifetime value is the monthly price multiplied by the average number of months a member stays. Average months is roughly 1 divided by your monthly churn rate. A $30 plan with 8% monthly churn lasts about 12.5 months, worth about $375 in revenue.

The most you should pay for a new member depends on how fast you want it repaid. At a 70% margin and a two-month payback target, a $30 member is worth up to $42 to acquire.

How it works

The math behind the calculator.

Average membership length = 1 ÷ monthly churn.

Lifetime value = monthly price × average membership length.

Lifetime gross profit = lifetime value × gross margin. This is your break-even cost per member.

Max cost per member = monthly price × margin × payback months. A shorter payback target is more conservative.

New members from budget = monthly ad budget ÷ max cost per member.

How to use the result

  • Lower churn raises lifetime value faster than a higher price. Track cancellations by site and month.
  • Judge advertising on cost per new member, not cost per wash or per click.
  • Spend more after rain, pollen and road salt, when drivers are ready to join.
  • Use a payback target you are comfortable with, then grow budget while cost per member stays under it.
Calculator questions

Answered plainly.

What is a good churn rate for a car wash membership?

It varies by market and operator. Many washes track monthly churn in the single digits. Every point of churn you remove adds months to the average membership and raises what a member is worth.

How much should a car wash pay to get a new member?

Work back from margin and payback. If a member pays $30 a month at a 70% margin and you want acquisition repaid in two months, you can pay about $42 per new member.

Can you track memberships sold from ads?

Usually, yes, by connecting sign-ups from your point of sale, app or online checkout to the campaigns that drove them.
